Rootrainers™ Specifications

Rootrainers™ are the perfect start for nearly all plants, and especially those that are sensitive to disturbance and require deep root runs. Ideal for growing on seeds, seed-lings, plugs and cuttings.

The Rootrainer system is made up of deep seed trays, divided into separate segments known as ‘books’. They are unique because they open up like a book, for easy inspection and easy transplanting.

Rapid Rootrainers™

Rapid RootrainersThe Rapid Rootrainers™ are the smallest in our Original tray range, ideally suited for shrubs and herbaceous plants, for potting on and for bedding and container plants.

Please Note: Rigid trays are an essential part of the system. Clear propagating lids are available as an optional extra.

Deep Rootrainers™

Deep RootrainersDeep Rootrainers™ are the workhorse of the range - suitable for broadleaved trees, or conifers grown on a long cycle. For shrubs, herbaceous and bedding plants, sweet peas and fruit bushes.

Please Note: Rigid trays are an essential part of the system. Clear propagating lids are available as an optional extra.

Compact Rootrainers™

Compact RootrainersThe Compact Rootrainers™ has a smaller tray than the Original Rapid (with 20 cells as opposed to 32) and has been hailed as an extremely user friendly addition with all the features of the Original Rootrainers™ incorporated into a compact module.

Please Note: Holding trays are an essential part of the system. Clear propagating lids and drip trays are available as optional extras.

Note: The compact tray is smaller than the original tray. The books are held in their own slots, allowing spacing out to give plants more room as they grow.

Slim Rootrainers™

Slim RootrainersSlim Rootrainers™ are specialist products for producing excellent root systems. Ideal for conifers and small leafed plants.

Please Note: Rigid trays are an essential part of the system. Clear propagating lids are available as an optional extra.

Maxi Rootrainers™

Maxi RootrainersThe Maxi Rootrainers™ are the largest modular Rootrainer in the range, perfect for broadleaved trees grown on a long cycle to larger salable sizes and for plants destined for dry sites.

Please Note: Rigid trays are an essential part of the system. Propagating lids are not available for the Maxi.

Jumbo Rootrainers™

Jumbo RootrainersThe Jumbo is the largest Rootrainers™ in the range, perfect for broadleaved trees grown on a long cycle to larger salable sizes and for plants destined for dry sites.

The Jumbo is a single cell, that opens up exactly like the other rootrainer books. We currently do not have a tray system for the Jumbo.

Torpedo Pots

Torpedo PotsDesigned for plants that develop a deep strong root, Torpedo pots offer a tray system for handling plants, whilst also being able to remove individual cells when needed. With a very strong construction, the pots will last for many years.

With grooves to guide the roots downwards, and legs to hold the drainage hole clear of the ground, Torpedo pots offer superb air-pruning benefits, creating a very healthy, strong root system.

Rootrainers™ MailPacks

Rootrainers Mail PackThe unique, simple and safe way to send plants by post. Place Rootrainers™ in pack. Close Lid. Tape around top and bottom. Add Address Label and Postage. Mail.

Visibility of plants ensures greater care is taken in transit. Air-holes allow the plants to breathe.

Designed to hold the Deep Rootrainer (12cm cell), MailPacks can also be used with the Rapid Rootrainer (8cm cell), with some additional wadding beneath the book to hold it in place. Please get in touch for quotations.

Rootrainers™ Racking

Commercial RackingRootrainers fit onto any bench, but some of our customers have asked for a specialised system to improve the efficiency of their operations. We now offer 2 racking systems, the Commercial Pallet Rack, and the rootrainer racking system. The racking ensures that the plants gain maximum benefit from the air-pruning function of Rootrainers, by keeping the bottoms of the cells held off the ground.

The rack holds 12 rootrainer trays, suiting the Rapid, Slim or Deep models.

All trays can be easily reached from around the rack. The lower bar on the rack allows for forklift transport without disturbing the plants.

When empty, or with plants up to around 26cm tall, the racks can be stacked on top of each other, allowing for greater efficiency of space and transport.

Rootrainers™ Racking Station

Racking StationDesigned for the smaller grower/amateur market, the racking station allows for 8 trays to be held on two levels.

Again, this ensures that air-pruning takes place to maximum efficiency, whilst keeping as many cells as possible in a small and organised space.

Rootrainers™ — Giving you and your plants the best

Rootrainers™ are the perfect start for nearly all plants, especially those that are sensitive to disturbance or require deep root runs. They are ideal for growing on seeds, seedlings, plugs and cuttings. Rootrainers™ are made form 100% recycled and recyclable plastics.

In the last 20 years, over 60 million cells have been sold to professional growers throughout the world and the resulting plants are now specified in many landscape and forestry contracts.

Tildenet offers support to both large and small growers, advising on the use of Rootrainers™ for a wide variety of plants, from strawberries to potatoes, vines to date palms, conifers and Quercus.

The enormous success of Rootrainers™ since their introduction in the UK and Europe and their widespread adoption for the growing of trees and shrubs as well as flowers, fruit and vegetables, is due to the many advantages they possess for nurseyman, forester and horticulturist alike.

Rootrainers in Mass use

Quality — Rootrainers™ encourage optimum root formation including strong, straight roots, a fundamental requirement of healthy and successful growth.

The rectangular shape provides greater surface area and the grooves allow more roots to develop on the outside of the plug. The air-pruning design means no root repairs — just fibrous straight roots.

Growing in the nursery

Economy — Less compost, healthier Plants! Rootrainers™ are reusable and are proven to have a long life — SIX and more years are common in many nurseries. Also books may be replaced individually when damaged without the need to discard the whole tray. Rootrainers™ mean less work and less compost.

Growing from Seedlings

Flexibility — Rootrainers™ are available in a number of different sizes to accommodate the widest possible range of plant species. The same outer tray is used for different sizes, except the largest (Maxi), which has its own tray.

Rootrainers™ are the only modular system which allows plants to be spaced out without re-potting.

Spruce Cuttings

Packing and Plant Delivery — Rootrainer plants are easily extracted from the 'open books' without 'shock' (even when frozen), for grading, packing and transplanting.

The rectangular root plugs pack tightly into uniform bundles in plastic film for safe and economic delivery. Alternatively, high value plants can be delivered in the Rootrainers™ books, which provide optimum protection, using the custom designed Rootrainers™ Mailpacks.
